With the rapid development of electronic products during recent decades,all kinds of portable devices are becoming thinner and lighter.USB Type-C interface has entered into public’s sight.Several portable devices even cancel the design of headphone jack for thinner body.
The pins of USB Type-C Connector are close to each other,spacing between two adjacent pins is only 0.25mm.As shown in figure above,CC,SBU and VBUS pins are adjacent.According to USB-PD Specification,VBUS maximum voltage could reach up to 20V.Therefore,actions like plugging,twisting of a Type-C interface may cause CC,SBU to touch VBUS’s high voltage.Such threat also exists on D+/D- pin though they’re a bit far away from VBUS.(though Tx/Rx’s also close to VBUS, high voltage won’t attach Tx/Rx pin because signals are transmitted by capacitive coupling.external TVS are usually used for protection.) In order to protect downstream devices ,a protection switch’s needed to disconnect abnormal high voltages and meanwhile switch different channels of data transmission.ET7480 is a very suitable IC for such application.
ET7480 is a high performance USB Type-C port multimedia switch which supports analog audio headsets. ET7480 can pass USB2.0 signal, analog audio, sideband use wires and analog microphone signal through USB Type-C port. It also supports pin detection and switching of OMTP and CTIA.
ET7480 includes full I2C communication interface,which can be easily controlled by host.
Application

ET7480 supports low resistance switch with as high as 20V high voltage protection function on SBU port and USB port on USB Type-C receptacle side.
ET7480 also possesses OVP protection function,which will switch off the internal signal routing path to protect back-end circuit when abnormal high voltages occur.
